Follow the journey from collection to Centre.

The Tolkien Centre for the North is being created step by step. This will be the place to follow its progress as the building, collections, programme and community come together.

The story is underway

The doors are not open yet—but the story has already begun.

We will share progress at Buene, stories from the collections, Foundation milestones, partnerships, research, exhibitions in development, events and the people helping bring the Centre to life.

The first stories are now being prepared. Future updates will be dated and collected here, creating a public record of the journey from idea to living institution.

Why Buene became the Centre’s future home

Buene gives the project something rare: a historic building with its own memory, placed visibly in the life of Risør. Its timber rooms and harbour setting offer an intimate alternative to a conventional museum building.

The Centre will grow into the building carefully. Rooms can open in phases while exhibitions, research facilities and public programmes develop. Buene is not yet open to visitors, but it already gives the project a real home and a clear direction.

The collections already exist

The Centre begins with more than 10,000 books, manuscripts, proofs, translations, artworks, letters, journals and historical objects gathered through decades of collecting and scholarship.

Their importance lies in more than their number. Provenance, correspondence, friendships and research connect the objects to a wider human history. The Foundation will keep that knowledge together and make it available for study, publication and public discovery.

Two collectors, one shared responsibility

Pieter Collier and Jan H.E. Boom followed different routes into Tolkien’s world. One journey grew through bibliography, manuscripts and publishing history. The other began while Professor Tolkien was still alive and recorded the international community that formed around his work.

Bringing the collections together changes their future. What began as private collecting becomes long-term stewardship, with the Centre created to preserve both the material and the knowledge surrounding it.
