Meaning before magnitude
The ambition is not simply to assemble the largest collection. It is to preserve meaningful material together with its provenance, context and personal histories.
TOLKIEN CENTREFOR THE NORTH · RISØRNOCollections & research
The founding collections represent decades of bibliography, collecting, friendship and international research. Their greatest value lies in the stories and knowledge that surround them.

The ambition is not simply to assemble the largest collection. It is to preserve meaningful material together with its provenance, context and personal histories.
Scholarship should lead to publication, education and wider understanding. The Centre will support researchers, students, cataloguing, digitisation and new interdisciplinary work.
The Centre will provide a permanent home for additional archives, research material and personal histories that might otherwise become dispersed or lost.

A proof can reveal how a book was made. An inscription can preserve a friendship. A translation can tell the story of how Middle-earth crossed a border and entered another culture.
Cataloguing these connections is as important as caring for the physical objects. The archive will therefore preserve knowledge, provenance and testimony as carefully as paper, ink and cloth.
