Buene & Risør

A historic home at the water’s edge.

Buene places the Centre in the everyday life of Risør: a visible, welcoming waterfront home where the building’s memory can meet a new cultural purpose.

Buene is the future home of the Centre, but it is not yet open to the public. Follow our project updates for news about events, previews and the phased opening.

01

Buene today

Historic timber rooms, harbour views and traces of earlier lives give the building an atmosphere no purpose-built museum could imitate.

02

Buene tomorrow

The proposed programme will adapt these rooms for exhibitions, reading, research, books, events and gathering while respecting their distinctive character.

03

Come for the Centre. Stay for the South.

Risør’s white wooden town, coastline, islands and forest make the visit part of a wider journey through Sørlandet. Local roots and international ambition belong together here.

A building with memory

Buene is not an empty container waiting for a collection. Its timber, proportions and harbour setting already create a distinctive experience of arrival and discovery.

The proposed transformation will be phased and respectful: opening rooms gradually, testing programmes and allowing the institution to grow with the building and the community around it.

The collection exists. The knowledge exists.
The opportunity now is to give them a home.
